Ingham Regional's Free Student-Athlete Heart Screening Program

In an effort to give student-athletes, parents and coaches a little peace of mind, Ingham Regional Medical Center has established a free comprehensive heart screening program for tri-couty area athletes.  Cardiologists from the Ingham Cardiovascular Group have organized several screening days throughout the spring where local high school athletes can receive a free screening to identify potential heart conditions and abnormalities.

The noninvasive screening includes a blood pressure check, an electrocardiogram (EKG) to evaluate teh heart's electrical activity and a review of test results by an Ingham Cardiovascular Group cardiologist.  In some cases, an echocardiogram- or ultrasound of the heart- may also be performed.

Screening Dates:
Saturday, April 23, 10am-2pm
Ingham Cardiovascular Group Main Office
2134 Hampton Place, Okemos

Saturday, May 7, 10am-2pm
Ingham Regional Medical Center
401 West Greenlawn Ave, Lansing

Saturday, May 21, 10am-2pm
Location TBD

To make an appointment for one of the screenings, please call the Ingham Cardiovascular Group at 517-347-3000.

Team News for the Week of April 17th

The Lowell Tournament for Saturday (the 16th) was cancelled due to wet conditions on the course.

Brighton Invitational Monday 10am shotgun (expect delays).  Could be cancelled due to expected snow (where is the warm weather?).  Tuesday's CAAC Blue Jamboree at Jackson will be played at Arbor Hills Golf Course.  Shot gun start at 9am, no lunch provided so bring a sandwich for the cooler.  Dress warm for both days.  Please bring a pair of gloves that can be worn between shots and find some loose fitting warm items that can be worn to play in.  Cold muscles are tight muscles and that is not what we want.  Try to stay warm!

This week's practice schedule:
Monday- Varsity- 6 players in Brighton, all others practice with Coach Dean at College Fields 3-4:30pm, Dress Warm!!
Tuesday- Varsity- 6 players in Jackson, JV match at Chisholm Hills versus Everett- 3pm tee time so they will miss 6th hour.  All others on your own to practice!

Athletic Recruiting Seminar at Chippewa Middle School

Here is a chance for your student athletes to learn insider secrets to make sure they have the best chance possible at receiving an athletic scholarship.

You, your student-athletes and their families, have all been invited to NCSA's "College Recruiting Simplified" on Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 at 7pm in the Auditorium of Chippewa Middle School.

Former NFL player, Cecil Martin, will be covering "The Five Things You Need to Know" and "The Five Things You Must Do" to get recruited.

This is a free event that no student or parent should miss!

As of today, we have added the Haslett Invitational to be played at Forest Akers East tomorrow, April 15th!  We will also be playing on Saturday in Lowell.

Practice Update

A few parents have asked questions about practice schedules for golf.  Practices are posted on Coach Stolz's classroom window and he is often in text communication with players as well.  Practice runs from 3-4:30pm on non-match practice days unless the the team plays a practice round.  This is dependent upon the weather conditions as well as the course schedule at College Fields.

We are aware that the Team Schedule link on the blog is not up to date for the JV team and we are working with the Okemos Athletic Boosters to correct the situation.  Schedules were given out to golfers earlier this spring and we will continue to post updates on the blog.

Golf Matches Begin Today

The varsity team begins match play today versus Haslett at College Fields.  Six varsity golfers will play in the match in addition to six additional players.   Six JV golfers are missing school on Friday to play in the DeWitt Boys JV Golf Invitational.  Good luck to our Chieftains as they begin their season!  Results will be reported here.

For most matches, six golfers compete with the top four scores counting towards the team totals.  After school matches involve playing 9 holes of golf and invitationals/tournaments include 18 holes.  Golfers are chosen a day or two prior to competition based on their practice play.

In The Week Ahead:  This Saturday the varsity team is playing in the Lowell Invitational at 11am at the Deer Run Golf Club.  There is a second invitational for varsity next Monday in Brighton at 10am.  On Tuesday the 19th, the varsity team will participate in the Jackson Jamboree which begins at 4pm in Ann Arbor.  Also on Tuesday, the JV team will travel to Chisholm Hills to tee off against Everett High School at 3pm.  Finally, on Wednesday the 20th the JV will face Holt at College Fields at 3:30pm.  Parents are welcome to come out to support the team!

Rory McIlroy's a good sport about losing the green jacket

Mon Apr 11 08:07pm EDT
Now this, friends, is a sportsman.
One day after Rory McIlroy's apocalyptic meltdown at the start of the back nine at Augusta, a span of three holes in which he surrendered six strokes and the lead he'd held since Thursday, McIlroy found himself in the presence of the green jacket after all, albeit on the shoulders of champion Charl Schwartzel. Both Schwartzel and McIlroy were headed to Malaysia to compete in the Malaysian Open. And, as you can see, McIlroy isn't too broken up to manage a smile.
"Flying to Malaysia with Charl!" McIlroy said on Twitter. "Glad one of us has a green jacket on!!!" McIlroy also re-tweeted messages from fans who joked that they didn't know there were houses at Augusta until McIlroy hit his tee shot on 10 up among them.
It's entirely possible that McIlroy may gain almost as many fans with the graceful way he handled defeat, answering direct questions with a wry smile, as he would have with victory. We can't all know what it's like to win a green jacket, but we all know what it's like to fall short.
"Well, that wasn't the plan!" McIlroy tweeted shortly after the end of the round. "Found it tough going today, but you have to lose before you can win. This day will make me stronger in the end."

Purdue University Coaches Golf School

CJ is interested in attending the Purdue Univ. Golf School this upcoming June.  There are two session dates:  June 14-18 and June 20-24.  If three members from the same high school golf team attend, there is a $300 discount per golfer.  This camp accepts golfers at different levels of ability and development, but there is a special group within the camp that addresses the interests of kids who would like to play college golf.  There are evening talks about the recruiting process and the experience of being a college golfer.

You can read more about this camp at http://www.coachesgolfschool.com/ if you are potentially interested (the website says $200 discount but this year's brochure says $300).  I also can email you a copy of last year's itinerary so that you can look at the daily schedule.  If your golfer is interested, please send me an email at kymmhadlock@yahoo.com.  In order to qualify for the team discount, we would need to send in our orders together.  I am also happy to drive all kids to and from the camp.

Golf and Individual Charity Efforts

With little fanfaire, Bubba Watson recently donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross for Japanese quake and tsunami relief efforts. K.J. Choi gave $100,000—an act of charity that apparently is routine for him: according to the article,  from his first victory on the PGA Tour, Choi had given a percentage of his winning check to the church he attended in the city that week. The PGA Tour, of course, also benefits numerous charities each week, but I count individual giving as more motivating than corporate.Watson’s giving apparently was inspired by a conversation he had with Ryuji Imada, who had pledged $1,000 for every birdie, and then didn’t get a single birdie in the first round.

I think it must be nice to have the financial wherewithall as an individual to be able to donate $50,000—or $100,000—to worthy causes. My own donations generally are in the $10 to $20 range. In spite of what you may have heard, teachers don’t make a lot of money. And neither do part-time golf bloggers.
